MIKE NELSON
Weather has been Mike Nelson’s favorite subject since he was 7 years old! He credits a powerful thunderstorm that roared through his Madison, Wi neighborhood as his introduction to the wonders of weather.
Mike received his degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mike began his weather career in 1976 at Weather Central, a Madison based weather consulting firm, specializing in forecasts for TV, radio, agribusiness, ski areas and utilities
In 1979, Nelson partnered with fellow meteorologist, Terry Kelly, in developing a computer weather graphics system for television. This pioneering system, eventually became the most widely used television weather graphics system! Weather Central - now an IBM company, continues to be widely used around the world.
Mike and his wife Cindy are both originally from Madison, WI. In 1985, they moved to St Louis, MO where Mike served as Chief Meteorologist for KMOV-TV until 1991.
Mike and his family moved to Denver in 1991 and he has been forecasting the weather in Colorado ever since! He currently serves as Chief Meteorologist for Denver7 KMGH-TV.
Mike has authored three books on weather and climate, “The Colorado Weather Almanac” (2007) and “The Colorado Weather Book” (1999). His latest book is “The World’s Littlest Book on Climate” - explaining the science and the dangers of Global Warming.
Mike has won 20 Emmy awards for Weather Excellence. He is also a recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award and a two-time winner of the Colorado Broadcaster of the Year award.
In 2001, Mike was recognized by the Colorado Broadcasters Association as their "Citizen of the Year" for his volunteer work in Colorado schools.
In 2016, Mike was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences – recognizing his many years of service to the broadcast industry.
In 2018, Mike was named a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Less than 1% of AMS members are so honored. Mike is the only television meteorologist in Colorado to ever receive be named an AMS Fellow and one of just 25 weather-casters nationwide.
Mike enjoys sharing his knowledge of the weather with young and old, visiting nearly 100 schools, clubs, charities and service organizations each year.
His Tornado Dance is a much-anticipated event! Mike estimates that he has spoken to nearly 1,000,000 children in his 48-year career!
Mike and his wife Cindy, have two grown children; Christiana and Anders and three grandchildren, Liam, Owen and Josephine.
