She also reports on legislative activity for newspapers in northeastern Colorado. Goodland began covering the General Assembly and Colorado state government in 1998 as a reporter for the Silver & Gold Record. She has also reported for the Colorado Statesman and the Colorado Independent.

She has won numerous awards for reporting from the Colorado Press Association and the Society for Professional Journalists. In 2023 Goodland was given the Keeper of the Flame Award by the Colorado Chapter of SPJ, in recognition of lifetime achievement and for efforts to mentor new reporters at the state Capitol, where she is the dean of the state capitol press corps.

When the General Assembly is out of session, Goodland covers water policy, focused on the Colorado River and drought, which she calls "job security."

Goodland is currently president of the Denver Press Club, the nation's oldest continuously operating press club. She lives in Lakewood with her husband, Jeff Cowell and her Golden Retriever puppy Brandy. She is also a professional Celtic harpist, with performances for Nobel Peace Prize winners and the Irish ambassador to the United States.
